|NOTICE No: MT000003962
|MODEL: Mazda MPV
|AFFECTED VINs: N/A
|SUBJECT: Popping Noise from Front Inner Fender Area
Symptoms and Conditions:
When making a right or left turn on a road with a dip, there may be a
popping/tapping noise coming from the front fender wheel area. The noise sounds
like something may be hitting the fender when the vehicle hits the dip and the
front strut spring is compressed.
The root cause of the noise may be the plastic inner fender panel hitting the
front strut coil spring during spring compression.
- Road test the vehicle and confirm the noise occurs only when the
suspension is compressed, and determine if the noise is on the left or right
side of the vehicle.
- If the noise is present, raise the vehicle on a hoist and check the strut
coil spring for a 'rubbing' mark indicating the spring has made contact with
the plastic inner fender panel.
- Make a mark (chalk or marker) where the inner fender panel and spring
could make contact. Then remove the inner fender panel and cut a small portion
of the plastic inner fender panel where marked. Only remove enough plastic to
prevent the spring from contacting the inner fender panel.
- Re-install the inner fender panel and confirm the noise is gone.
